What's Included in a Free Home Measure and Flooring Quotation in Newark-on-Trent?

What actually happens during a free home measure and flooring quotation?

A free home measure means we come to you. No showroom visit, no guesswork from a photo, no quoting off square footage you've paced out yourself. We visit your home, take accurate measurements of every room you're considering, look at the subfloor condition, discuss what you want to achieve, and give you a proper written quotation based on what we actually find.

It costs nothing. There is no obligation to go ahead. And because we bring samples with us, you can see how different floors look in your own light, against your walls, next to your furniture.

That is the whole point of doing it this way. Flooring chosen under a showroom's strip lighting often looks entirely different once it is down in a Victorian terrace in Newark or a new-build semi in Lincolnshire. Seeing it in situ, in your space, is the only reliable way to choose.

What we look at during the visit

We are not just measuring floor area. A thorough home measure is as much about the subfloor as it is about the surface. The things we check include:

  • Floor flatness and levelness. LVT is thin and flexible, which means any ridge, dip or high spot underneath will telegraph straight through to the surface over time. We identify whether levelling compound or latex screeding is needed before anything goes down.
  • Moisture and damp. Older properties across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire often have solid concrete floors with no damp proof membrane, or suspended timber floors that breathe unevenly. We look for signs of moisture that could affect the choice of product and the method of installation.
  • Existing flooring. If there is carpet, vinyl or old tiles to come up, we factor that in. Our old flooring removal and disposal service means you do not have to arrange a skip or a second contractor.
  • Thresholds and transitions. Where rooms meet, or where flooring changes from one material to another, the junction needs to be planned. We look at door clearances, step-downs and whether any doors need to be trimmed.
  • Heating system. If you have underfloor heating, the product choice matters. Not every floor covering is compatible, and the layering affects thermal performance.

None of this gets worked out later at a desk. We look at it in person so the quotation reflects reality.

Why samples at home beat a showroom every time

Stuart, one of our customers, put it well:

"We weren't sure what flooring we wanted but Nathan was brilliant and helped us by showing lots of samples and explaining the process to us."

That is a common starting point. Most people know roughly what they want, something durable, something that looks good, something that suits the room, but they have not necessarily decided between LVT, carpet, vinyl or laminate, or between a plank format and herringbone. Bringing a range of samples to the house means those decisions get made in context, not in the abstract.

We carry samples across the main product ranges we fit: LVT in plank, herringbone and chevron formats; carpet in various pile weights and fibres; engineered hardwood; vinyl and laminate. If a particular product or colourway is not in the bag, we can arrange for it to be brought on a follow-up or send a sample ahead of the quotation.

What the quotation covers

Once we have measured up and talked through what you want, we produce a written quotation that sets out:

  • The product recommended (or a choice of options if there are genuine alternatives worth considering)
  • The scope of subfloor preparation required
  • Removal and disposal of existing flooring, if applicable
  • Fitting, including any specialist work such as herringbone or chevron laying patterns
  • Any materials such as adhesive, underlay, trims or DPM

We quote each job individually. Every home is different. A straightforward carpet replacement in two bedrooms is a different scope entirely from a full-house LVT installation following a kitchen extension, and the quotation reflects that properly rather than applying a one-size figure.

Which flooring suits which rooms? What the measure helps us work out

This is one of the most useful parts of the visit. Standing in a room and looking at how it connects to adjacent spaces, where the light comes from and what the subfloor is doing makes the recommendation much more grounded than anything we could offer over the phone.

A few common scenarios we see across Newark and the wider East Midlands:

Kitchens and hallways. These take the most foot traffic and the most spillage. LVT is almost always the right answer here: waterproof, easy to clean, hard-wearing, and available in formats that look genuinely good. The professional fitting of LVT matters particularly in these spaces because the subfloor needs to be right.

Living rooms and bedrooms. Carpet is still the most popular choice for bedrooms, and for good reason: it is warm underfoot, quieter, and comfortable. In living rooms, the choice between LVT and carpet often comes down to whether there are children or pets, and how the room connects to the rest of the house.

Open-plan spaces. If you have knocked through or extended, continuity of flooring material across the whole space tends to look better and read as a larger room. We cover the planning side of this in more detail in our article on flooring for open-plan living after a Newark home renovation.

Older properties with uneven floors. Much of the housing stock across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire is pre-1970s. Solid floors in these homes are frequently uneven, and suspended timber floors move seasonally. During the measure, we assess whether levelling is needed and what the best product choice is given the floor's condition. Skipping that assessment is how floors fail prematurely.

When to book a home measure

Sooner than you think. If you are planning a renovation, a home measure early in the process means flooring is costed into the project properly rather than being an afterthought. If you are replacing existing flooring, the measure gives you a clear picture of what preparation is needed before anything goes down.

East Midlands winters are damp. Humidity rises from autumn onwards, and that has a direct effect on timber and engineered wood flooring in particular, which needs time to acclimatise before fitting. Booking the measure in advance gives us time to plan the installation around the conditions properly.

Wendy, another of our customers, had three rooms done and described the process clearly:

"Nathan visited me initially to discuss what I was wanting for a new floor covering in 3 rooms. He advised me on the most appropriate material and colour. He communicated well and professionally. The work was carried out over 2 days and I am thrilled with the results."

Three rooms, two days, done properly. That kind of project starts with a good measure and a clear brief.

Frequently asked questions

Is the home measure genuinely free, with no obligation? Yes. We visit, measure and advise at no charge. There is no pressure to proceed, and no fee if you decide not to go ahead. We would rather give you the right information and earn the work than push a sale.

How long does a home measure take? It depends on the size and complexity of the job. A single room might take twenty minutes. A full house with multiple rooms and subfloor questions to assess could take an hour or more. We do not rush it, because the detail gathered during the visit is what makes the quotation accurate.

Do I need to have decided on a flooring type before you visit? No. Plenty of our customers have a rough idea but have not made a final decision. Part of the visit is going through the options with you, showing samples and explaining the trade reasoning behind each recommendation. If LVT is the right choice, we will say so and explain why. If carpet makes more sense for a particular room, we will say that too.

Can you fit herringbone or chevron LVT in an older Newark property? Yes, and it tends to look excellent in period homes. The pattern works well with the proportions of Victorian and Edwardian rooms. The one thing that matters is subfloor preparation: herringbone lays flat only if the floor underneath is flat. We assess that during the measure and include any levelling work in the quotation. More on this in our article on chevron and herringbone LVT in period properties across the East Midlands.
