The floor people stop to look at
A herringbone or chevron floor turns a hallway, a kitchen or a whole ground floor into the feature of the house. It is also the floor that most punishes a careless fitter: a pattern laid off-centre, a line that wanders across the room or a messy cut at the doorway is visible from the moment you walk in.
That is exactly why we enjoy them.
Herringbone or chevron
- Herringbone: rectangular planks laid in a staggered zig-zag, each one butting into the side of the next. Warm, classic and the pattern we are asked for most.
- Chevron: planks cut at an angle so they meet in a clean point, forming a continuous V. Sharper and more formal, and more demanding to cut.
Both work in premium LVT and in real wood. LVT gives you the pattern with a waterproof, low-maintenance surface; wood gives you the pattern in real timber that can be refinished for decades.
Setting-out is the whole job
A pattern floor is planned before a single plank goes down. We work out where the centre line runs, how the pattern meets each doorway, which way it should point through an open-plan space and where the cut pieces will fall, so you never end up with a sliver at the most visible wall.
We plan that at your home visit, which is also when we survey the subfloor. A pattern floor needs a flat base even more than a plank floor does, because every dip pulls the points out of line.
A whole bungalow, three colours
One of our favourite jobs: a whole bungalow laid in herringbone throughout, in three different colours, on a DPM and self-levelling compound we installed first. It is the job in one sentence, and the customer's review says it better than we can.
How long it takes
Longer than plank, and it should. Most single rooms in herringbone are a day or more; a full ground floor is usually two or more days. We will give you a realistic timescale in your quotation, including the preparation.
Where we work
We lay herringbone and chevron floors across Newark-on-Trent and across the East Midlands: Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. Flexible payment options are available on domestic work.
